Hardship: Era of extravagant lifestyle over, Sanwo-Olu’s wife tells women

Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of the Lagos State Governor, on Wednesday called on women to adopt a more modest approach to living in response to the current economic challenges facing the nation.

In her address, she emphasized, “We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history where prudent and intentional living is more critical than ever.”

Her remarks come as Nigerians continue to feel the effects of recent economic reforms implemented by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira.

“As women, who form the backbone of our homes and society, it is vital that we acknowledge and adapt to the present economic realities, not just in Nigeria but globally. The era of extravagant lifestyles is behind us. We must realign our priorities, focus on what truly matters, and serve as role models within our homes and communities,” she stated during the closing ceremony of the 24th National Women’s Conference, organized by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO).

The event took place at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos, under the theme “Soar Beyond Boundaries: Enriching Communities.”

Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Chairperson of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), emphasized the importance of not only advocating for increased representation of women in leadership roles but also showcasing the qualities that make women indispensable—especially in resource management and innovative thinking.

“We must go beyond simply calling for more opportunities for women in leadership,” she stated. “It is crucial that we demonstrate the unique strengths women bring to the table, particularly in the judicious use of resources and creative problem-solving.”

She further stressed the importance of modesty, urging women to adopt a more prudent approach to their finances and lead by example. “In today’s economic climate, it is essential that we practice financial discipline and serve as exemplary resource managers,” she added.
