Turaki Emerges as Northern PDP Consensus Candidate for National Chairman

Northern stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as their consensus candidate for the party’s National Chairmanship ahead of the November convention.

The announcement was made late Wednesday in Abuja by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who disclosed that the decision followed a series of consultations among northern governors, party elders, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC). The move, he said, reflects ongoing efforts to promote unity and coordination within the PDP’s northern bloc as preparations intensify for the party’s national convention.

The endorsement is understood to be part of a broader zoning arrangement within the PDP, under which the 2027 presidential ticket has been designated for the South while the National Chairmanship slot was reserved for the North. Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former minister, is seen as a bridge-builder with extensive political experience and strong acceptance across northern party structures.

Party insiders noted that Turaki’s selection was influenced by his legal expertise, leadership record, and reputation for inclusiveness, which many believe could help reposition the PDP for stronger national performance.

While many supporters have welcomed the consensus as a step toward internal stability and strategic renewal, others within the party have voiced concerns that such arrangements could limit internal democracy by discouraging open competition. Some aspirants from the North are still expected to contest for the position despite the consensus.

Observers say the coming weeks will be crucial in determining how the decision shapes the PDP’s unity and direction ahead of the convention. Much will depend on Turaki’s ability to manage divergent interests, reconcile internal factions, and energize the party’s base as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
